The Effect of Brewing Vernonia cinerea tea on Body Mass Index of Overweight Teenagers in Pa Bon Hospital in Pa Bon District, Phatthalung Province.
The aim of the study was to study the effect of
brewing Vernonia cinerea tea on body mass index, satisfaction and
adverse reaction after dringking this tea of overweight teenagers in Pa Bon
hospital,Pa Bon District, Phatthalung Province. This study was a quasi
experimental research. Two months follow-up trial was conducted during November
2014 and December 2014. The samples were 35 teenagers between 18 to 25 years
old who were diagnosed overweight with the body mass index of 23.00 kg/m2 in
Diet Physical Activity Clinic (DPAC) at Pa Bon hospital, Pa Bon District,
Phatthalung Province. The subjects were advised to take one sachet of Vernonia
cinerea tea brewed
with a cup of hot water (150 ml) three times a day (30 minutes before each
meal). The body mass index of overweight teenagers
was evaluated every week for two months. The results showed that the subjects’
satisfaction on overall characteristic of the Vernonia cinerea tea was
at high level. However, the adverse reactions were reported including dry
mouth, dry throat and tongue
numbness. The body mass index of overweight teenagers decreased significantly after drinking Vernonia
cinerea tea (p < 0.05) which demonstrated that Vernonia cinerea
had an effect on the body
mass index. Therefore, Vernonia cinerea could be utilized as an
alternative for those who want to lose weight and could be developed as natural health care products.
